James Nathaniel Brown (February 17, 1936 – May 19, 2023) was an American football player, civil rights activist and actor. Apart from being greatest running backs in NFL history, Jim Brown had a notable acting career, appearing in several films and TV shows. Brown began his acting career before the 1964 season, playing a buffalo soldier in a Western action film called Rio Conchos.
MGM cast Brown in his first lead role in The Split (1968), based on a Parker novel by Donald E. Westlake. Biographer Mike Freeman credits Brown with becoming “the first black action star”, due to roles such as the Marine captain he portrayed in the hit 1968 film Ice Station Zebra. He also became an advocate for civil rights and social justice causes. His impact on and off the field continues to be recognized and celebrated to this day.
